Volga Federal District - Overview

Volga Federal District is a federal district of the Russian Federation located in the south-eastern part of European Russia. It was formed by the President of Russia on May 13, 2000. Nizhny Novgorod is the administrative center and the largest city of the district.

Volga Federal District and the Volga region (historical territory that includes the regions along the Volga River) are often confused. However these are different entities - part of the Lower Volga (Volgograd and Astrakhan regions) refers to the Southern Federal District, Upper Volga to the Central Federal District (Tver, Moscow, Yaroslavl, Ivanovo, and Kostroma regions), while Volga Federal District includes regions geographically located in the Urals (Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, Perm Krai, Orenburg and Kirov regions) and Central Russia (Mordovia, Penza region).

The population of Volga Federal District is about 29,636,000 (2016), the area - 1,036,975 sq. km.

The national composition according to the All-Russian Population Census 2010: Russians (66.2%), Tatars (13.4%), Bashkirs (4.3%), Chuvash (4.3%), Mordva (2%), Udmurt (1.7%), Mari (1.6%) .

Most of the pipelines from Western Siberia pass through the territory of Volga Federal District, which contributes to the development of the local chemical industry. At the same time, the district also produces about 20% of Russian oil.

Volga Federal District has significant production potential (about 25% of the total industrial production of Russia). More than 80% of the Russian automotive industry, 60% of aircraft manufacturing, 40% of petrochemicals, 30% of shipbuilding, and 30% of the production of the military-industrial complex are concentrated here.

The multifunctional agro-industrial complex of Volga Federal District produces about 25% of agricultural products in Russia and 30% of the grain.
