Gorno-Altaysk – the view from above

Gorno-Altaysk is a city with a population of about 62,000 people located in the south of Western Siberia of Russia, the capital and the only city of the Altai Republic.

The city is located in the northwestern part of the Altai Mountains, in the intermontane basin, surrounded by low hills, at an altitude of 270-305 meters above sea level. Let’s look at Gorno-Altaysk from Mount Tugai (641 meters) located on the territory of the city. Photos by: Andrei Kireev.

The Republic of Kalmykia is located in the extreme south-east of the European part of Russia. The present culture of Kalmykia is closely connected with the culture of the Kalmyk people – the only people in Europe traditionally professing Buddhism.

Podporozhye is an abandoned village located on the bank of the Onega River in the west of the Arkhangelsk region. Some time ago there was a whole church complex in the village. But only the Church of Our Lady of Vladimir, built in 1757, has survived.

William Carrick (1827-1878) was a Scottish-Russian artist and photographer. In 1859, in St. Petersburg, he opened the first photo studio in the Russian Empire.

Carrick quickly gained fame, capturing the daily life of the country and became the first Russian ethnographer-photographer. Let’s look at some of his works. The second part. Source: humus.

Marfo-Mariinsky Convent of Mercy of the Russian Orthodox Church was founded by Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia in Moscow in 1909. Today, it is located in the center of the city on Bol’shaya Ordynka Street, 34.

Yelets, first mentioned in 1146, is a city with a population of about 100,000 people located in the Lipetsk region, 82 km west of Lipetsk. In total, there are more than 200 monuments of history and culture here.

Photorealistic Paintings of Ivan Shishkin

Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin (1832-1898) was one of the greatest Russian landscape painters, who created very photorealistic pictures.

In his paintings he depicted the nature of the middle part of the East European Plain also known as Russian Plain, one of the largest plains in the world.
