Kostroma, founded in 1152, is the administrative center of the Kostroma region located about 346 km north-east of Moscow on the Volga River.
The historical center of the city is known for its mostly preserved architectural ensemble of the era of classicism of the late 18th-19th centuries. This city is included in the list of settlements that have the official status of “historical”, and is traditionally included in the “Golden Ring of Russia”. Photos by: Eduard Skvortsov.
Ivan Susanin Square – the central square of Kostroma and one of the most picturesque places in the city. The main architectural dominant of the square is the fire tower of the 19th century.

Ipatiev Monastery in Kostroma

The Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery is located in the western part of Kostroma on the bank of the river of the same name near its confluence in the Volga. It is considered one of the symbols of the city.

The Museum of Wooden Architecture “Kostroma Sloboda”

The State Architectural-Ethnographic and Landscape Museum-Reserve “Kostroma Sloboda”, located in the city of Kostroma, is one of the oldest open-air museums in Russia.
The main territory of the museum is situated behind the southern wall of the Ipatiev Monastery. Another exposition area can be found behind the northern wall.

Beautiful still life paintings of Marina Zakharova

Marina Zakharova was born in Kostroma and graduated from the Yaroslavl Art School in 1987. She takes part in Russian and foreign art exhibitions. In 1998, she received an award from the President of Russia for achievements in art. The paintings of the artist can be found in the collection of Kostroma Art Museum and private collections in Russia and abroad.
Most of the paintings of Marina Zakharova are still lifes. But the author does not agree with this definition of the genre of her paintings. She says that she paints the portraits of flowers. The catalog of paintings.

Holy Trinity Ipatievsky Monastery of Kostroma

Holy Trinity Ipatievsky Monastery is Orthodox monastery of the Russian Church. The monastery played significant role in Russian history of 16th and 17th centuries. It was first mentioned in chronicles in 1432.
The monastery is located in Kostroma, at the confluence of Kostroma and Volga rivers. It is situated relatively far from the central part of the city (about 30 minutes walk). Near the monastery there is a bridge across the river offering a good view. The photos were captured by Petr Ushanov.
