Sights of Moscow Oblast – the heart of Russia

Moscow Oblast (unofficially – Podmoskovye) is inextricably linked with the capital of Russia, despite its separate administrative status. In terms of population, it surpasses all other subjects of the Russian Federation, second only to Moscow.

This is a region not only with huge economic potential, but also a wonderful place with a rich thousand-year history, attracting travelers from all over Russia and abroad. Photos by: Slava Stepanov.

The pseudo-Gothic St. Nicholas Cathedral. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century on the place where the Mozhaisk Kremlin once stood.

Nikolo-Berlyukovskaya Monastery in the village of Avdotino, about 42 km north-east of Moscow. The monastery was founded more than four centuries ago. The bell tower is 88 meters high.

The Borodino Field – the site of the largest battle of the French invasion of Russia of 1812 located near Mozhaisk.

The main monument to Russian soldiers of the Borodino Battle – a 27-meter cast-iron obelisk topped with a gilded dome and an Orthodox cross. The remains of the commander Peter Bagration are buried at the foot of the monument. He was mortally wounded in the battle.

The Cathedral of Michael the Archangel – a three-hundred-year-old church located near Lake Belskoye in Bronnitsy.

The Volokolamsk Kremlin – a former military fortification located northwest of Moscow. The walls of the fortress have not survived, but the bell tower, the Resurrection and Nikolsky cathedrals still stand on its territory.

The monument to the ship “Oryol” (“Eagle”) in the village of Dedinovo in Lukhovitsy. The monument stands on the site of the shipyard where the three-masted frigate “Oryol” was built in 1667-1669. It is considered the first Russian sailing ship of the Western European type.

The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior at the Nikolo-Ugreshsky Monastery in Dzerzhinsky. The monastery was founded by Prince Dmitry Donskoy in 1380, the year of the Kulikovo Battle.

The Moscow Canal in the city of Dolgoprudny connecting the Moscow River with the Volga. The length of the canal is 128 km.

The Dmitrov Kremlin in Dmitrov founded by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky in the 12th century and surrounded by earthworks. Nine towers of the Dmitrov Kremlin have not survived.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin – one of the symbols of Zaraysk. The church was founded in the Time of Troubles at the beginning of the 17th century.

This octagonal water tower was built in Zaraysk at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, there is an observation deck on the upper tier of the tower.
