A walk along the shores of the Great Pond in Tsarskoye Selo

Tsarskoye Selo is a museum-reserve located in Pushkin town, part of St. Petersburg. It includes a palace and park ensemble of the 18th-19th centuries, the former imperial country residence.

In the center of the Catherine’s Park, which is part of the museum-reserve, you can see the beautiful body of water called the Bolshoy (Great) Pond. Photos by: Yuri Yuhanson.

This pond is the largest body of water in the town of Pushkin (about 16 hectares). It was dug in the early 18th century, and originally had the shape of an octagon. Later, its shape changed, various pavilions and buildings were built on the shores giving it a special charm.

Turkish Bath and Palladian Bridge

Turkish Bath is the last building on the territory of the Catherine’s Park. It was built as a memorial monument to the Russian-Turkish war of 1828-1829.

Turkish mosque in Adrianople (Edirne, Turkey) was taken as a model. It was a kind of retaliatory move to the Turks because on the conquered territories they often had baths in churches.

Chesma Column, a 25-meter monument, was built to commemorate the victory over the Turks in the naval Battle of Chesma happened in 1770. The sculpture of an eagle breaking a crescent, the symbol of Turkey, crowns the column.
