The main attractions of Kazan

Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan and a major port on the left bank of the Volga River, is located 820 kilometers east of Moscow.

This city with a population of about 1.2 million people is one of the largest economic, scientific, educational, cultural and sports centers in Russia. In 2005, Kazan celebrated its millennium.

Early spring in the ancient town of Pskov

Pskov, located in the northwest of Russia, is one of the oldest cities in the country. For the first time it was mentioned in chronicles in 903.

Prior to the beginning of the 18th century, Pskov was one of the largest cities of Russia and Europe, major defense and trade center. Currently, the city is an important tourist destination. The photos were taken by Eduard Gordeev.

One year of life of Krasnoyarsk city

Krasnoyarsk is the largest cultural, economic, industrial and educational center of Central and Eastern Siberia, the administrative center of Krasnoyarsk Krai (the second largest region of Russia).

This city, founded in 1628, is the largest of the old cities of Siberia. Krasnoyarsk is the easternmost city in the country with a population of over 1 million people. Let’s look at the city in motion, at different times of the day and year.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky covered with deep snow

Last week, the southern part of Kamchatka was hit by a cyclone that brought sleet and storm wind. The capital of the region, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky city, was covered with deep snow, and three snow avalanches added even more snow.

Let’s see how the city looks after this snow apocalypse. The photos were taken by Alex Spiridonov.

Norilsk, with a population of more than 175,000 people, is located in the Arctic Circle. It is ranked seventh in the list of the most polluted cities in the world. About 60 percent of its population is employed in the metallurgical industry.

Elena Chernyshova, a Russian documentary photographer based in France, lived in Norilsk for a few months photographing the life of the city.

Samara city in winter time

Samara is a large city located in the Middle Volga area of Russia, the administrative center of Samara region. The population is about 1.17 million people (2014), it is the seventh most populous city in the country.

Samara is situated on the left bank of the Volga River, at the confluence with the Samara River (hence the name of the city). The photos were taken by Stepanov Slava.

Saint Petersburg – above the three bridges

Saint Petersburg city has more than 90 rivers and canals (the total length is about 300 km) and about 100 water bodies (lakes, ponds, artificial reservoirs), which are spanned by about 800 bridges (excluding bridges in the territories of industrial enterprises).

That’s why such pictures as this one, where you can simultaneously see three bridges, are not something out of the ordinary, but, at the same time, they are very picturesque. The photo was made by Ivan Turukhano.

Winter in Nizhny Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod (often called just “Nizhny” in spoken language) is a city in Russia, the administrative center of the Volga Federal District and Nizhny Novgorod region.

It is located in the center of the East European Plain, at the confluence of the Oka and the Volga rivers. Nizhny Novgorod is an important economic and industrial center of Russia, a major transport hub.
