The Kingdom of Permafrost in Yakutsk

“The Kingdom of Permafrost” is a unique complex, which is a huge, always frozen cave near Mount Chochur-Muran on the outskirts of Yakutsk. In Soviet times, this place was used as a huge cellar for storing food.
The tourist complex first opened its doors to all visitors in 2008. Since then, it has become one of the main tourist sites in Yakutsk. Photos by: zavodfoto.
At the entrance visitors are given warm coats and helmets. In winter, the cave is relatively warm, given that the temperature in Yakutsk can reach minus 50 degrees Celsius outdoors, but here it doesn’t fall below minus 10 degrees.
In summer, you can easily freeze here without a warm coat, as the temperature doesn’t rise above minus 4 degrees.
If you look at the walls, you can see with your own eyes what permafrost is – all the moisture in the soil freezes, and it becomes literally pierced by ice veins. Ice forms crystals shining in the light of colored lamps. Inside the cave is divided into several halls.
