The Russian Imperial Army was the land army of the Russian Empire. Since the second half of the 19th century, the army was formed on the basis of conscription.
The entire male population was subject to compulsory military service from the age of 21. The term of active service in the land army was 6 years, in the Navy – 7 years.

Multimedia show for the G-20 summit in St. Petersburg

September 5-6, 2013, St. Petersburg hosted a meeting of the G-20 countries leaders. At Peterhof (museum, a monument of world architecture and the palace and park art of the 18th-19th centuries located on the territory of St. Petersburg), colorful multimedia performance was shown to the leaders of the countries.
Guests of the summit enjoyed the unusual show with light, lasers, fire, video mapping, pyrotechnics, high-altitude fireworks, special three-dimensional sound effects. Multimedia show was lasting 22 minutes. Photos by Petr Ushanov

These photos are not fake. At least so say the editors of the newspaper “Kopeysk Worker” published in Kopeysk town (Сhelyabinsk region).

Baskunchak is a salt lake located in Astrakhan region, about 270 km north of the Caspian Sea, and 53 km to the east of the Volga River.

Moscow from the top of Ostankino TV tower

Ostankino TV tower constructed in 1963-1967 is a television and radio broadcasting tower located in Moscow. The height of the tower is 540 meters. It is the 8th highest free-standing structure in the world.
It is very hard to get to the top – the antenna tower. It is possible only on the night of Monday to Tuesday, during a few hours of scheduled maintenance. These unique photos were taken by Dmitry Chistoprudov

Soviet heavy aircraft used to transport space rockets

VM-T “Atlant” is a Soviet heavy transport aircraft, which is a modification of the strategic bomber 3M. This aircraft was used to transport various parts of space-rocket complexes to the Baikonur Cosmodrome.
In the 1980s, more than 150 flights were made to deliver to the Baikonur the elements of launch systems “Energy” and “Buran”. Because of the specific appearance the aircraft was called the “flying barrel”.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is the seventh largest city in the Russian Far East, the center of the Kamchatka region. It is located in the southeastern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula on the shores of the Avachinskaya Bay, Pacific Ocean. Near the city, there are active volcanoes Koryakskaya (3456 m) and Avachinskaya (2741 m).

Endangered Barracks of Konigsberg

As a result of the Second World War, the northern part of the German province of East Prussia, with its capital Konigsberg, was given to the Soviet Union. The region received name Kaliningrad oblast, the city was renamed Kaliningrad.
The authorities didn’t pay any attention to the heritage of German culture. Old Town was not restored, the castle ruins were demolished in the late 1960s.
