The Pashkov House – One of the Best Buildings in Moscow

The Pashkov House is one of the most famous neoclassical buildings in Moscow. Today, it belongs to the Russian State Library. The building is located on a hill overlooking the western wall of the Moscow Kremlin, at Vozdvizhenka Street, 3/5, building 1.
This architectural monument, built by order of the captain of Semyonovsky life-guards regiment Peter Pashkov in 1784-1786, was designed presumably by the architect Vasily Bazhenov. The Pashkov House on Google Maps. Photos by: Vladimir d’Ar.
After its construction, the Pashkov House immediately became one of the main architectural sights of Moscow.
Since the 2010s, the right wing of the Pashkov House houses the manuscripts department, while the left wing houses the music department and the cartographic publications department.
The impressive appearance of the building is partly due to its location. The Pashkov House stands on the high Vagankovsky Hill, as if continuing the line of its ascent, on the open corner of two descending streets.
The location of the building is also important symbolically. The Pashkov House stands on a hill opposite Borovitsky Hill, crowned by the Kremlin. The Pashkov House was the first secular building in Moscow, from the windows of which one could look at the towers and buildings of the Kremlin not from below.
