The interiors of the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo

The Alexander Palace is one of the imperial palaces of Tsarskoye Selo (today, the town of Pushkin, part of St. Petersburg), located in the northern part of the Alexander Park. The palace was built by order of Empress Catherine II in 1792-1796.
At the beginning of the 20th century, during the reign of Nicholas II, the Alexander Palace became the main residence of the imperial family and the center of court life. Photos by: deletant.

Russian submarine “Som” found off the coast of Sweden

Divers found the historical Russian mini-submarine “Som” (“Catfish”) that disappeared during the First World War near the coast of Sweden.
May 10, 1916, while carrying out patrols in the area of Aland Islands, the submarine collided with the Swedish steamer “Ingermanland” and sank. None of the crew of the submarine (18 people) survived.

The Hermitage Pavilion in Tsarskoye Selo and its mechanical tables

The Hermitage is a park pavilion built in the Baroque style in the Catherine’s Park in Tsarskoye Selo, the former Russian imperial country residence located near St. Petersburg.
The pavilion, constructed in 1744-1754, served for entertainment meetings of the courtiers. The Hermitage combines white columns, pilasters, architraves, pale turquoise walls and a number of gold-plated elements. Sixty-four decorative columns, stucco garlands, masks, lush window frames don’t leave smooth surfaces. Photos by: deletant.

In Soviet times, the myth that Russia (the Russian Empire) before 1917 was a backward peasant country without a strong industry and technology became widespread. However, the situation was not so straightforward, and here is one example.
March 19, 1906, by the decree of Emperor Nicholas II, the Navy of the Russian Empire received a new kind of force – military submarines. By 1916, the Russian Navy had 55 submarines.

The Russian Imperial Army was the land army of the Russian Empire. Since the second half of the 19th century, the army was formed on the basis of conscription.
The entire male population was subject to compulsory military service from the age of 21. The term of active service in the land army was 6 years, in the Navy – 7 years.

The population of the Russian Empire for a period of two centuries of its existence was multinational. In 1917, the country had more than 100 nations, not counting the small ethnic groups.
The Slavic peoples (Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Poles, Bulgarians and others) accounted for about 75% of the population. In 1913, the total population of the country was about 174 million people; 24.5 million lived in the cities.
