Chara Sands – one of the smallest deserts in the world
No comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Nature, Regions, Travel
Chara Sands, a tract in Kalarsky district of the Zabaikalsky region, is a sandy area (10×5 kilometers) located in Chara valley, in the foothills of Kodar ridge, 9 km from the village of Char, between the valleys of the rivers Chara, Middle Sakukan, and Upper Sakukan.
It is a geological monument of nature surrounded by larch taiga and swamps. Novaya Chara, a station on the Baikal-Amur railway, is located 10 km from this place.
Zabaikalye doesn’t have any other valleys with such large bodies of moving sands. Sand masses form ridges, dunes, and chains of dunes. The length of the dunes is about 150-170 meters, the height – up to 80 meters.
Chara Sands resemble deserts of Central Asia. The vegetation is little and it differs from the taiga. It is safe to say that Chara Sands is not only one of the smallest and northern deserts in the world, but unique and stunningly beautiful natural phenomenon. Chara Sands on Google Maps.
