Abandoned manor of the architect Khrenov in Zaklyuchye

Zaklyuchye Manor is located in the Tver region. You can reach it, if you drive on the M-10 highway from Moscow to St. Petersburg, and before reaching the city of Valdai and Lake Valdai take a turn to Borovichi. About 50 km from it, there is Lykoshino station. Nearby, hidden in the woods, on the bank of a forest lake, you will find this “castle.”
The estate appeared in the late 19th century. It was built for the St. Petersburg architect and artist Alexander Sergeyevich Khrenov. Many artists, architects and writers of that time tried to disappear in nature. Photos by: Dmitriy Gazin.
Most likely, the manor was built on his own project. This eccentric ensemble stands out from the other nearby buildings and resembles a medieval castle.
The main feature of the building is a full asymmetry. In addition, not only ordinary bricks, but massive boulders were used for the construction, strengthening the entourage of the Middle Ages and creating a whimsical silhouette.
Once the owner moved to China, this “medieval castle” was used as a summer camp and a sanatorium. Today, the picturesque ensemble is thickly overgrown with forests, flower beds turned into a jungle. The population of the nearby village is only 12 people.
However, the manor attracts tourists, who are interested in remarkable places located near the highway from St. Petersburg to Moscow, and don’t mind to become a hero of medieval legend for a short time. Zaklyuchye on Google Maps.
