The 16th FINA World Championships in Kazan

Yesterday, the 16th FINA World Championships (aquatic sports) was officially opened in Kazan, the capital city of Tatarstan Republic. The World Championships will be held from July 24 to August 16, 2015 (including the 16th FINA World Masters Championships that will be held August 5-16, 2015).
Competitions in six water sports (swimming, open water swimming, diving and high-diving, synchronized swimming and water polo) will be held in three main arenas. This is the first time in history when Russia holds such competitions.

Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan and a major port on the left bank of the Volga River, is located 820 kilometers east of Moscow.
This city with a population of about 1.2 million people is one of the largest economic, scientific, educational, cultural and sports centers in Russia. In 2005, Kazan celebrated its millennium.

Kul-Sharif Mosque – one of the main sights of Kazan

Kul Sharif Mosque is standing on the territory of the Kazan Kremlin. It is the main mosque of the Republic of Tatarstan and Kazan.
Construction of the mosque began in 1996. It was a re-creation of the legendary mosque of the capital of the Kazan Khanate that was destroyed during the storming of Kazan by the troops of Ivan the Terrible in October 1552.

A few hours are left until the opening ceremony of the 27th World Student University Games (Universiade) in Kazan. The event will start at 19:40 CET (Central European Time) on the largest sports facility of the city – football stadium “Kazan-Arena”.
More than 350 sets of medals in 27 sports will be awarded at the Universiade. The competitions will last until July 17. Athletes from 170 countries will take part in the Games.

Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan Republic and the center of Tatar people culture in Russia. From Tatar people language the word “qazan” means boiler or cauldron.
Kazan Kremlin is among UNESCO world heritage and a 1000 year history of Kazan makes it one of the Russian cities most often visited by tourists. Next year Kazan will host the 27th World Summer Universiade and this video is a nice promotion of the city.
