The Granite Kingdom of the Ulakhan-Sis Range

A lot of people know about the picturesque remnant cliffs on the Manpupuner Plateau in the Northern Urals in the Republic of Komi.
However, in Russia, there is a number of similar places and one of them is the mountain range of the Ulakhan-Sis – a geological complex located in the polar part of Yakutia between the Indigirka and Alazeya rivers. The Ulakhan-Sis on Google Maps. Photos by: Sergei Karpukhin.
The Ulakhan-Sis mountain range stretches for 160 km northeast from the Indigirka River. The name of the mountains means “Great Ridge,” and in a regional context, this is an accurate description: the Ulakhan-Sis mountains, modest in height (754 m), are the highest in this area of Yakutia.
The Yakuts and Evenks call these picturesque rocks Kysylakhs (“stone people”). For indigenous peoples, these are sacred places, revered since ancient times.
The rocks form freestanding ridges, resembling bizarre cities. And you simply cannot shake the feeling that this stunning accumulation of rocks is man-made. But no, they were created by nature: the frosts of polar Yakutia, the wind, and the water.
You can go on a photo tour to this unique place.
