The Largest Power Plant in Russia

Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power plant named after P.S. Neporozhny is the largest by installed capacity (6400 MW) power plant in Russia, the 7th largest hydroelectric power plant in the world.
The station is located on the Yenisei River, on the border between Khakassia Republic and Krasnoyarsk Krai, near the village of Cheryomushki, close to Sayanogorsk. Photos by Vadim Makhorov
Unique arch-gravity dam is the highest dam in Russia (245 meters) and one of the highest dams in the world.
Construction of the power plant had begun in 1963, and was officially completed only in 2000. August 17, 2009, the largest in the history of Russia’s hydropower accident happened there, which caused the deaths of 75 people.
Reconstruction of the station will be completed in 2014. The total cost of reconstruction is about 41 billion rubles (1.25 billion USD). Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station is an interesting tourist attraction.
