The New Sun – the Largest Diamond in the History of Russia

In Russia, work on cutting the largest diamond in the country’s history has been completed. The weight of the unique diamond of rare fancy color Vivid Yellow is more than 100 carats.

The diamond was named “The New Sun” – as a reflection of the history of the super-large diamond weighing more than 200 carats of a rich honey-gold color, which was mined by ALROSA at the Ebelyakh Arctic placer deposit, among the sands of an old river bed in Yakutia.

The masters of the ALROSA Cutting Complex faced a unique task – to choose the shape and parameters of cutting, polishing and symmetry that would best reveal the color and shine laid down by nature, while maximally preserving the record size of the diamond. Thanks to the highest skill of Russian experts, the diamond acquired impeccable proportions, emphasizing its depth and brightness of the sunny hue.

A team of 15 of Russia’s best specialists, with over 30 years of experience, worked on the creation of “The New Sun”. During the work, after creating a 3D model of the diamond, a spectral analysis was carried out and virtual projects of all possible diamond shapes were developed. To achieve the ideal balance between light, color and play of shades, each facet was verified by cutters with jewelry precision. Work on this masterpiece took more than 2 years.

The creation of the diamond became a new stage in the development of the Russian school of gemstone cutting “Russian Cut”, recognized as a standard throughout the world. “The New Sun” is one of the most significant events in the gemstone industry in recent years, emphasizing the high status of Russia in the global diamond industry.
