Overview: Geographical Features: Primorye is the farthest south-eastern region of Russia, situated in the East of Asia, between 42ø and 48ø North, 130ø and 139ø East, washed by waters of the Sea of Japan. Climate: Monsoon climate is the evident characteristic of the Kray. Winters are short but frosty. Summers are cloudy, rains and cyclones are usual. Annual precipitation falling mainly in summer, especially during typhoons, is about 600-900 mm. Due to a cold current along the coastline, thick fogs are usually quite long. Vegetation period lasts from 120-130 days in the North to 160-200 days in the South.
Population: In the beginning of the second millennium the total number of Primorsky Krai population amounts to almost 2,200,000 people. Representatives of 119 nationalities live there, overwhelming majority are the Russians. Density of the population in Primorye - 13 people per 1 sq km.
Science and Education: Vladivostok possesses great scientific and cultural potential. There is Far East Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences and 14 Institutes. In the city there are a lot of research and planning organizations. Vladivostok is the city of students. There are 9 higher educational establishments, the biggest of them is Far East State University, Technical University, Naval Academy named after G. I. Nevelsky, Academy of economy and management.
Economy: Advantageous geographical situation and rich natural resources potential of the Krai are the main conditions of economic development. Primorye is the most developed region in the Far East of Russia. About 30% of social and economic potential of the Far East is concentrated there: population, gross regional, industrial and agricultural production.
The economy of the Krai is multisectoral: more than 50 fields of industry, fishing, timber, mining, ship repair etc; farming and forestry, transport and communication service, trade and services sector are the leading fields.
Fuel and energy complex, transport and communication are the key sectors of the Krai economy. Fuel and energy complex has its own coals, but also imported fuel is used. Almost all types of transport, such as: ships, trains, cars, planes are developed. Marine transport is a specialization branch. Machinery construction, including ship building and repairing, aircraft building and instrument-making industry, ranks high in the Krai economy
Culture: Theatres play great role in cultural life of the region: Chamber, Dramatic theatre named after M. Gorky. There is philarmonia, circus, galleries. Primorsky department of Geographic society of Russia is the oldest building of regional studies of Primorye.
Vladivostok is the largest historical centre of the region. There are more than 200 monuments. The best resorts of Siberia and the Far East are in the city.
