Saint Sophia Cathedral in Vologda

Saint Sophia Cathedral is the oldest preserved stone structure on the territory of Vologda, a Russian city known for its particularly valuable historical heritage. It is one of the largest buildings of the era of Ivan the Terrible, constructed in 1568-1570s.

The Assumption Cathedral in Moscow was chosen as an architectural model. In the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Vologda, you can see preserved frescoes of the 17th century and the iconostasis of the first half of the 18th century. Photos by: Alexandr Lipilin.

Vologda – the Pearl of the Russian North

Vologda, one of the largest cities of the Russian North and the capital of the Vologda region, is located 474 km north of Moscow and 663 km east of St. Petersburg.

Museum of Lace in Vologda

Vologda, included in the list of Russian cities that have particularly valuable historical heritage, has a unique museum – Museum of Lace, the only one in the country.

The museum is located in the historic center of the city, in a two-story stone building – the object of cultural heritage of the 18th century (Kremlovskaya Square, 12). Working hours: 10:00 – 17:00. Closed: Monday, Tuesday.

Vologda Kremlin is historical and architectural complex located in the central part of Vologda. It was founded as a fortress in 1567 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible and played the role of defensive fortification in the 16th-17th centuries.

By the 1820s the Kremlin walls and towers were dismantled. Today the territory of the Kremlin is a historical and trade center of Vologda. Several architectural monuments built at the same time as the Kremlin were preserved. They are standing on the Kremlin Square. Photos by Ilya Pokrovsky.

The only lace museum in Russia

Museum of lace is a museum in Vologda city, the branch of Vologda State Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve. The address: Vologda, Kremlin Square, 12.

The museum is located in the historic center of Vologda in a two-story stone building – an object of cultural heritage of federal importance of the 18th century.
