Surgut GRES-2 is the largest thermoelectric power plant in Russia. The station is located in the city of Surgut (Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District). As of 2012, it is one of the largest thermoelectric power plants in the world in the annual generation and the largest producer of electricity in Russia.

The installed electric capacity is 5,597.1 MW, installed thermal capacity – 840 Gcal/h. The station is working on associated petroleum gas (70%) and natural gas (30%). The height of the pipes is 273 meters. Photos by Vadim Makhorov

Aluminum appeared in our lives only about century and a half ago, but in that short time it managed to go from being a decorative metal to the material, which allows us to move faster, to live in warmth and comfort, and enjoy all the benefits of modern civilization.

At the moment, the leader of the global aluminum industry is the Russian company RUSAL which accounts for about 12.5% of global production of aluminum that ensures the production facilities to produce 3.9 million tons of aluminum per year. Banknote of 1 billion rubles

One billion rubles (1,000,000,000 rubles) was a banknote used in the Caucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic in the period of hyperinflation of the early 1920’s.

Nominal value in figures and words, and warning labels are depicted on the obverse of the banknote.

Bachatskiy coal open-cast mine, located in Belovo city (Kemerovo oblast) is one of the largest mines of the Kuzbass (total area is about 20 square kilometers, depth – 300 meters). Annual production amounts to more than 8 million 700 thousand tons.

The mine produces fuel for energy and metallurgical industries of Russia and other countries around the world.

Chirkeyskaya hydropower plant is located on the river Sulak in Dagestan Republic. It is the largest hydropower plant in the North Caucasus and the highest arch dam in Russia. It is built in a narrow Chirkeyskiy gorge.

Boguchanskaya hydropower plant is being constructed on the Angara River (about 12 km from Kodinsk town and 740 km from Krasnoyarsk city). The construction of the station began in 1980 and was frozen from 1994 to 2005 due to lack of funds.

According to the ranking of British company Brande Finance Sberbank (Russia’s largest bank) is the most expensive Russian brand in 2011 with the value of about 12 billion dollars taking 65th rank in the top 500 brands of the world (58th rank in 2010).

Kursk Magnetic Anomaly

Kursk Magnetic Anomaly (Kursk oblast) is the most massive in the world iron ore basin. There are deposits of about 200-210 billion tons, accounting for about 50% of iron ore reserves on the planet. Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works plant or Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Kombinat (MMK) is the largest plant in Russia of such kind located in Magnitogorsk city. Here is a nice video of the plant in the production process.

Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station is located in Khakassia Republic on the Yenisei river. The plant is the largest in Russia and #6 largest in the world.

Almost a year ago (August 17, 2009) an accident happened at the station that caused flooding of the engine and turbine rooms, 74 people died. Here are the photos of the station captured this month (June 2010) by Misha Maklakov showing the process of station rebuilding and reconstruction. All the photos are clickable.
