Overview: Ryazan Region was formed on September 26 1937. Its territory is 39 600 sq.km. Its population is 1 306 600 residents (urban population amounting to 68,4%). It is divided into 25 districts, includes 12 towns, 26 urban type settlements and 456 rural administrations. The population density is 33 people per a sq.km. The center is Ryazan (536900 residents, 196 km south-east of Moscow). It is located in the center of the Russian plain on the spurs of the Mid-Russian hills, Meshera lowland, and Oka-Don plain (up to 237 m high). The climate is moderate continental (19°Ñ in July, -11°Ñ in January). The annual precipitation is around 550 mm. Podzol, grey forest soil, and degrading black soil. The city offers large, well equipped warehousing facilities at a fraction of the storage costs found in the Russian capital. It is also the home to more than 30 large enterprises, including an oil refinery, a food processing plant, and an automotive component factory.

The Ryazan Oblast is known for its production of petroleum products, precision instruments, radio electronics, textiles, and footwear. The oblast's wood-working and chemical enterprises specialize in the manufacture of mineral fertilizers and chemical products. There are also large deposits of high-quality peat for production of fertilizer in the area, in addition to cement limestone, glass and quartz sands, and other mineral resources. The region's skilled workforce is supplemented by five higher education and research institutes and 31 technical and vocational schools.
