Overview: Bryansk Region, a part of Russian Ferderation, was organized in July, 5, 1944, in according with Edict of Presidium of Supreme Soviet of USSR. The Bryansk city is the capital of the region. The history of Bryansk is longer than a millenium. Bryansk Region is located in a central part of the East-European plain, on the watershed of Dnepr and Volga river systems. Bryansk city is 379 km South-East from Moscow. The region has borders with two Republics (Independent States) and with four other regions of Russia: Gomel and Mogilev regions of the Republic of Belarus (West), Chernigov and Sumi regions of Ukraine (South), Kaluga and Smolensk regions of Russia (North) and Oryol and Kursk regions of Russia (East and South-East). Population: 1,474,900 total inhabitants, 1,003,100 townsmen and 471,800 villagers. 42 people per square kilometer. The region consists of 27 districts and has 16 cities (5 of them are "sub-regional" cities), and 27 urban-type settlements. The "Center of the region" (regional capital) is Bryansk city (458,000 persons population, founded in 985, 379 kilometers from Moscow). Another largest cities in region are Klintzy, Novozybkov, Dyatkovo. Climate is temperate continental. Winter is relatively tender and snowy, summer is warm. The average temperature in January is from 7 to 9 degrees centigrade below zero, in July is from 18 to 19 degrees centigrade. Average atmospheric precipitations from 560 to 600 mm. per year. Rivers and lakes. There are 125 rivers in Bryansk region for a total length 9000 km. The rivers in the Bryansk region are belong to Dnepr river basin. The longest river is Desna, inflow of the Dnepr river, source is near Nalety village (Smolensk region), flows into Dnepr river 6 km from Kiev, Ukraine, 1187 km. length. The main inflows of Desna in the region are Bolva, Navlya, Nerussa, Sudost, flows into Desna inside the boundaries of region. Besed and Iput rivers are inflows of the Sozh river, flows on the West of the Bryansk region. There are 49 large lakes in the region, the largest is Kozhany lake (450 hectares area). Minerals, etc.. Peat; sands, clay, chalk for glass industry, for portlandcement industry and for various construction materials.
INDUSTRY. BMZ - The Largest Plant in Bryansk region More than 120-years-old corporation BMZ (joint-stock company "Bryansk engineering works") is one of the largest in Russia. Well-known in CIS diesel-locomotives, giant ship diesels,locomotive diesels, refrigerator cars, heavy-load cars, rail-polish trains - that is not the complete list of production. The Crystal Wonder from Dyatkovo Dyatkovo glass and crystal is a real wonder. From 1829 Dyatkovo glasswares won top awards at the internatinal fairs. Dyatkovo is a not large sity in a beauty spot tucked away in the Bryansk Forests. If you'll come there, you'll get a lucky chance to make a trilling excursion to the history of the Dyatkovo glass which is represented by a lot of exhibits in the Dyatkovo Crystal/Glass Museum.
AGRICULTURE. The natural conditions are favorable for agriculture in the Bryansk region. The most important of them are: plain territory, a long season without the frost and sufficient warmth and moisture.The whole square of the ground is 3,5 millions hectares. 50% is the agriculture fields, near 30% is the forest. More 70% of the agriculture fields used for the tillage, and more 25% is for the pasture. Cattle breeding. The main branch of the agriculture is the cattle breeding. In the Bryansk region the main sub-branches of the cattle breeding is the cow farms (with milk and meat specialisation), the pig farms, and the chicken farms (meat and eggs; the most important farm is "Snezhka" near Bryansk). The horse breeding in region concentrated in the Lokot stud, in the Brasovo distict. This stud is growing trotters. Planting. The main part of the ground in planting is using for grain cultures. The largest harvest of grain is in the central and south districts of the Bryansk region. The potatoes is one of the main products of the regional planting, too. There are powerful potato processing works in Pogar city (Pogar district). The farms are also growing various vegetables. The farms in the Bryansk region is also growing the cultures for non-food using. Usually it is the flax (fiber for cloth and seed for oil), the hemp (fiber for ropes and seed for oil), the beet for sugar making, and the rape for oil. The herbs began to be cultivated in Bryansk region not a long time ago.
Bryansk region has a large industrial basis to develop the motorways. Bryansk city is the industrial center of the road-building machines manufacturing. Joint - stock companies "Arsenal" and "SMM" makes grader machines, asphalt layers, etc. The well-known in Russia portlandcement producer "Maltzov's Portlandcement" and a couple of ferroconcrete items producers is a good potential to buid and modernize roads.Large oil and gas trunk pipelines are going across the Bryansk region. The main pipeline is famous "Druzhba" ("Friendship" in English). It's a main "Oil River", flowing from Russia to East Europe and farther. Sites of the oil and gas companies in region: joint -stock company "Trunk Pipelines Druzhba" (under construction now), and "Bryansknefteproduct" company. The large gas pipelines Dashava - Moscow and Shebelinka - Moscow makes a large possibilities to use the cheap gas for the further developing of power engineering in a region. Bryansk State University educates the engineers of the pump stations for the oil and gas pipelines. A couple of machinery works in Bryansk region have a technical base to produce and to repair the power equipment.
