Volodarsk is a small town with a population of about 10 thousand people located in Nizhegorodskaya Oblast, about 60 km west of Nizhny Novgorod. In most cases, the main tourist attraction of small Russian towns is the local museum of local lore and Volodarsk is no exception.

However, the museum in Volodarsk occupies a unique wooden building known as “Nikolai Bugrov’s Summer Dacha” – one of the few surviving houses of similar architecture in the European part of Russia. Photos by: Anna Sukhareva and Yaroslav Gunin.

Voskresenskoye is a small village with a population of about 6,000 people located 130 km north-east of Nizhny Novgorod, on the banks of the Vetluga River. Voskresenskoye is known since the 16th century as a trading village. Local residents were busy in agriculture and timber industry.

Let’s take a look at the estate built by Sergey Nikanorovich Belyaev, one of the main local timber merchants, in 1904-1905. This amazing building decorated with old Russian carving is a shining example of the merchant’s house built using motifs of Russian folk architecture. Voskresenskoye on Google Maps. In the past it was a swamped karst chasm, and today it is one of the most polluted bodies of water on the planet known as the “Black Hole.”

The lake is located between Nizhny Novgorod and Dzerzhinsk, on the outskirts of Dzerzhinsk eastern industrial zone (coordinates 56.2635788 43.6624149, Google Maps location). The lake is surrounded by barbed wire with banning-warning labels. Photos by Lana Sator
