Economy: It is one of Russia's major iron and steel producing areas and also has a significant chemical industry. Vologda is an export oriented region, and the region's main exporting industries are steel (75% of total exports); chemicals - sulfuric acid, mineral fertilizers, ammonia and nitric fertilizers (18%); and wood products (5%). The United States is the major importer of steel produced in the region. The priority of this sector is due to the location of two very large steel mills in Cherepovets. A traditional flax growing area, the region's main light industry is flax fabrics. Vologodskaya region is the most industrially developed administrative unit of the Northern economic region. Covering 1% of the Russian territory, it produces 19.1% of ferrous metals, 11.8% of mineral fertilization, 12.6% of linen fabrics. Production of Volgograd enterprises makes up 2.3% of overall volume of Russian export.

Administrative division: The region is divided into 26 districts, 4 towns of the regional submission, 11 towns of district submission, 14 town settlements, 375 villages. Center of the region is the town of Vologda.
