Overview: Geographical Features: Vologda Oblast is situated in the southwest of the East European plain. Its administrative center, Vologda, is 500 km (300 miles) northeast of Moscow on the Vologda River, a tributary of the Sukhona River. Vologda is an important rail junction with lines to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Arkhangelsk and Kirov. It borders on Kostromskaya, Yaroslavskaya, Tverskaya regions in the south, on Novgorodskaya regions in the south-west, on Leningradskaya region in the west, on the Republic of Karelia and Astrakhanskaya region in the north.
