Geographical Features: Novgorod Region has a territory of 55,300 sq. km. The administrative capital of Novgorod Region is the city of Velikiy Novgorod (not to be confused with the city of Nizhny Novgorod on the Volga River). Novgorod Region is located in Northwest Russia, bordering the Leningrad, Vologda, Tver and Pskov regions. Distance from the city of Velikiy Novgorod to Moscow is 590 km (370 miles), while St. Petersburg is located 180 km (112 miles) to the northeast.

Population: The Population of Novgorod Region is 728,700; urban population makes up to 71% of the total. Density of population is 13 per sq. km.

Economy: Industry, which makes up for approximately 40% of the regional economy and contributes over half of tax revenues, is mainly concentrated in the cities of Velikiy Novgorod, Borovichi, Staraya Russa and Chudovo. Over 40% of the industrial output is being exported. The region is rich in mineral springs, cure-mud. But the major wealth of the region is forest. It covers 42% of the region`s territory. There are 83 fields of clay, limestone, sands, mineral dyes, peat. There are 7 fields of fresh subterranean waters.

Administrative division: The region is divided into 21 districts, 3 towns of regional submission, 7 towns of district submission, 22 town settlements, 278 villages. Centre of the region is the town of Novgorod. It was founded in 859.
