Geographical Features: Stavropolsky region is situated in the central part of Perdkavkazja and on the northern range of the Big Caucasus. The region borders on the republic of the Northern Osetia, the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria and Georgia in the south, on Krasnodarsky region in the south-west and the west, on Rostovskaya region in the north, on the republic of Kalmykia in the north-east, on the republic of Dagestan in the east, on Chechnya and Ingushetia in the south-east.

Economy: Industry (1993, %): fuel and power generation complex (TEK): 26.9, treatment of raw materials: 8.7, machine building: 11.2, chemical industry: 16.4, light industry: 34.6. Agriculture and processing of farming products also dominate the krai's economy, though there is some light and mechanic engineering industry and exploitation of natural gas deposits.

Administrative division: The region is divided into 26 districts, 10 towns of the regional submission, 8 towns of district submission, 7 town settlements, 267 villages. Centre of the region is the town of Stavropol, founded in 1777. Distance to Moscow is 1,621 km. Main towns: Stavropol, Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk.
