The territory of present Krasnodar krai of Russia were populated by various tribes and nations from ancient times. Genoa republic founded several colonies in the Middle Ages, later the region was conquered by Mongols of the Golden Horde. Later the lands of Krasnodar krai were captured by Russia. In 1735 Russian state began to build Caucasian fortifications to defend the region from Ottoman Empire. Russia and Turkey had numerous wars with the main aim to establish control of the regions of Black Sea.
