Overview: Geographical Features:
The republic of Northern Osetia is situated in the northern range of the Big Caucasus. Length of the territory from north to south is 120 km, from west to east is 125 km. The republic borders on the republic of Georgia in the south, on the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in the west, on Stavropolsky region in the north, on the republic of Ingushetia in the east. Osetia is mountainous region. The largest river is the Terek. Forests cover about 22% of the republic.

Economy: In the republic there are reserves of ore, building materials and mineral waters.
Administrative division: The republic is divided into 8 districts, 2 towns of the republican submission, 4 towns of district submission, 7 town settlements, 91 villages. Capital of the republic is the town of Vladikavkaz. It was founded in 1784.
Brief History:
Since the 18th century Osetia was a part of Russia. Since the middle of the 19th century Osetia was a constituent of Terskaya region.
After the revolution, in 1921 as a national okrug it became a part of Gorskaya autonomous republic.
In April 1922 Osetinsky and Digorsky national okrugs were united into one - Vladikavkazsky, which was changed into North-Osetinskaya autonomous region in 1924.
In 1936 - into North-Osetinskaya Socialist republic.
In 1990 Osetia was the first to be an independent republic.
