Winter in Perm city – the view from above

Perm is a city with a population of more than 1 million people located in the east of the European part of Russia, in the Urals, the administrative center of Perm Krai.

It is a major industrial, scientific, cultural, and logistics center of the Urals founded in 1723. Perm is the third largest city of Russia in terms of land area stretching along the Kama River for 70 km. Photos by: Slava Stepanov.

A few days ago, in Perm, the festival of arts “White Nights” started. An exhibition of Krasnoyarsk artist Vasily Slonov “Welcome! Sochi 2014” was one of the participants of the festival. A couple of days later, it was closed by the local authorities.

Officials found the exhibition Russophobian and defaming the Olympics in Sochi, said the organizer of the festival Marat Gelman. However, he said, the exhibition will be reopened in the independent cultural center “Rechnik” today.

Perm – the region of contrasts

Perm is a city in the east of the European part of Russia, in the foothills of the Urals, the administrative center of Perm Krai. The city is a major industrial, scientific, cultural, and logistic center of the Urals.

Perm was founded in 1723. In 1876, first in the Urals and Siberia railroad was built through the city. In 1979, the city’s population exceeded 1 million people.

In 2009, the authorities of the region started an ambitious project – “Perm – Cultural Capital.” The project significantly increased the number of cultural events held in the city, a lot of various art objects appeared in the streets.

The tragedy at Perm city nightclub

The following video was captured at the beginning of conflagration happened at Perm city nightclub “Lame Horse” tonight. At least 109 people were killed and 140 were injured mostly because of smoke inhalation and panic. According to officials the fireworks blast caused the fire.

December 7, 2009 is declared a day of mourning in Russia.
