Vologda Kremlin is historical and architectural complex located in the central part of Vologda. It was founded as a fortress in 1567 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible and played the role of defensive fortification in the 16th-17th centuries.

By the 1820s the Kremlin walls and towers were dismantled. Today the territory of the Kremlin is a historical and trade center of Vologda. Several architectural monuments built at the same time as the Kremlin were preserved. They are standing on the Kremlin Square. Photos by Ilya Pokrovsky.

A lot of monuments of ancient architecture were preserved in Velikiy Novgorod. The oldest of them is St. Sophia Cathedral, which construction started in 1045. The cathedral is located inside the Kremlin - the historic center of the city (the present day walls were erected in the 15th century). The photos were captured by Petr Ushanov.

Kolomna is a city in the Moscow region of Russia, administrative center of the Kolomna district, a river port. The city was mentioned in the Laurentian Chronicle in 1177 as an existing, but according to recent excavations the foundation of the city belongs to the years 1140-1160. Kolomna is known for remained rare monument of Russian defensive architecture – Kolomna Kremlin. The city is situated at the confluence of the Moskva and Oka rivers, 100 km south-east of Moscow and 80 km north-west of Ryazan. Smolensk fortified wall also known as Smolensk kremlin is the fortification constructed in 1595-1602. The fortress played extremely important role in the defense line of Russian state. Today it is an architectural monument and one of the main attractions of Smolensk city. The photos were captured by ctulhuftagn (photos are clickable).

Tobolsk city, located about 250 km from Tyumen city of Russia, had the status of the capital of Siberia in the 16-19th centuries.
