Elizabeth asks: Is English widely spoken in Russia? I am planning a trip to visit Moscow and St Petersburg next year. Would it be too cold to visit in mid May ? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks, Elizabeth.
Today English is main foreign language Russian children are studying at schools but the standards are not high so after the school not a lot of people are able to speak fluently or at least understand English. The situation is much better in large cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
As for the weather in the middle of May the average temperature of May in Moscow is about 13C and 11C in Saint Petersburg.
Kale Shantanu asks: How much time does it take to reach St. Petersburg from Ufa? Please suggest me a shortest safest and cheapest way!
There is direct flight from Ufa to Saint-Petersburg available. The price for one way flight is about 7,000 Rubles or 230 USD (October 2010) and time in flight is about 3 hours. Also there is a regular train running between the cities, departure from Ufa at 11:25 local time, arriving to Saint-Petersburg at 12:40 with time in travel 2 days and 3 hours (long journey) and the ticket price starting at 2,500 Rubles or about 80 USD. So in general I think the best way is to have a flight in spite of the higher price.

First of all you should have a flight from New Delphi to Moscow (there are such flights available). From Moscow you will go by direct daily train to Tolyatti (train departure: 16:10 local time, Kazansky railway station; arrival to Tolyatti: 10:56). As for the visa you will need an invitation from Russia to get it, so you better consult about it with the travel agency arranging the trip.
You can check for the current weather reports of the region on our site. Of course while staying in the city you should avoid having walks in the evening and night time, not in the center of the city, better stay in group if there is any because of possible accidents on ethnic issues.

The more comfortable way it to go by train from Kazansky railway station of Moscow because the train leaves the city in the evening, you have a night in the train and in the morning you are in Yoshkar-Ola. The average costs were already mentioned in one of the answers on Yoshkar-Ola city page.

Zainal Abidin Ahmad asks: Good Afternoon
I'm interested to visit your country. How could I managed to reach your place (Kazan city). Is it safe place for the muslim to visit your place.
Hopefully, I could visit your country one day.
If you are going to visit Kazan city there are some international flights available connecting Kazan city (Kazan international airport) with Istanbul (Turkey), Frankfurt (Germany). It is safe enough because a lot of people of Kazan city and Tatarstan republic are Muslims. And of course the risks are much lower if you don't go for a walk in the evening/night times in the suburbs of the city.

The city of Izhevsk according to the investigation of the magazine Russian Newsweek based on the statistics of crimes happened in 2002-2006 is on the 27th place of Top 50 most criminal Russian cities. So it is not a very safe place but I think if you stay in group, avoid going for a walk late at night at the suburbs and the other risky activities you will be safe enough.

shani asks: Do Saransk is good for tourism?
If you want to know about attractions and places of interest Saransk is among the typical cities of medium population located in Russian province with several churches, cathedral, there are also several local museums, monuments to the famous people born in Saransk. If you want to know the level of various services for tourists there is nothing special, usual for Russia low-medium level.
Robert asks: I am going to be traveling to your lovely country what types of clothes i should or should not bring and would it be ok to learn to speak some of your tongue so I might be able to speak to someone.
You can bring all the usual types of clothes may be avoiding very extravagant ones if going to provincial cities and towns.
And about language I think you can learn some typical phrases like Spasibo meaning Thank you, Privet (less formal) or Zdravstvuytye (more formal) for Hello, Do svidaniya for Bye. I am not sure if it is possible to learn the language fast enough to have a conversation on various topics.
Good luck on your trip.

I would like to know about timetables for the trains from Moscow to Syktyvkar as well as from St Petersburg to Syktyvkar, i know that if i want to use third class that i will need to buy the ticket in advance, but how much time in advance? and the most important question, how much money would it cost? thank you in advance
The train from Moscow to Syktyvkar runs several times a week (if you tell me the period you are interested in I will give you the info about the specific days). The distance is about 1412 km, the departure at 14:05 local time from Yaroslavsky railway station, the prices vary from 2300 to 5000 Rubles depending on the level of comfort. As for train from Saint-Petersburg the departure is at 06:58 from Ladozhsky railway station several times a week, time in travel about 41 hours, the cost of the tickets from about 2000 Rubles. So I think the train from Moscow will be better in term of speed.
As for the period of time you need to buy the tickets in advance it is about 2 weeks.

Gary asks: I need transportation from St Petersburg airport (Pulkovo) to Veliky Novgorod on May 5, 2010 and return transportation on May 11, 2010. Who can I contact and how much does it cost for three adults and luggage?
There are several ways of going from the airport of Saint-Petersburg to Veliky Novgorod city.
The fastest one and of course the most expensive is to go by taxi from the airport straight to the destination city. The price is about 4500-5000 Rubles (about 150-170 USD).
Another way is to go by train. From the airport you should go to Vitebsky railway station. The departure at 7:53, arrival at 13:06 local time. Also you can go to Moskovsky railway station. There are two trains: first one with the departure at 8:12 and the second one at 17:18). Not sure about the price of the tickets but much cheaper than by taxi.
